Bringing an infrared sauna into your home is more than just buying another health device, it’s about creating a wellness sanctuary that inspires you to use it. Choosing the right spot for your sauna is a key decision that will affect how often you’ll enjoy it. This article is a guide inspired by our 28+ years of selling saunas to 10’s of thousands of customers, to help you pick the best place.

1. Why Indoor Placement Matters

Our Transcend infrared saunas are designed for indoor use. They should be placed in a dry, climate controlled, indoor location. Because of ambient moisture in the air, cold outdoor temperatures in the winter, and the concern of bugs /rodents, they cannot be outdoors, even under a covered patio.

Placing them indoors will increase your sauna’s longevity (our saunas last for decades!) and ensures optimal performance in terms of heat-up time and maximum temperature.

2. Surface Flexibility: Carpet, Wood, Tile — It’s All Good

One of the great things about High Tech Health saunas is how adaptable they are when it comes to where you put them:

  • You can place the sauna on any level surface, even carpet.
  • There’s no need for special flooring as long as it’s stable and level.
  • You can also position them near walls since the outside of our units do not get hot, so you don’t have to leave big gaps around it such as if you want to place in a corner.
  • There will never be any water or heat damage to your home, plus far infrared light is antimicrobial so you won’t need to worry about mold buildup!

3. Good Locations to Consider

Here are some options in your home where your sauna can be placed comfortably and practically:

  • Bedroom: This is the most common place customers put their High Tech Health saunas. A quiet corner of your bedroom gives you great privacy, encourages you to use it more consistently, and gives easy access to your bathroom to hop in the shower after a session.
  • Bathroom: If you have space, putting a sauna in a bathroom can feel spa-like. Just make sure there is no direct water splashing on your sauna and you are all good.
  • Basement: A basement is a great choice if you are limited on space in your bedroom or bathroom. As long as it’s dry, climate-controlled, and finished (i.e. no bugs / rodents) then it will work great. And with our Smart Sauna you have remote start capability to get it started and heated up from another space in your home or even from anywhere!
  • Walk-in Closet: Our 1 or 2 person size (and these plug into a standard 15-amp 120V outlet) will work surprisingly well if you have a large closet and offers the most privacy.

4. Think About Your Habits: Out of Sight = Out of Mind

When picking a spot, it’s not just about physical space, it’s also about your behavior. We have seen over the years that placing a sauna in a room you rarely use can lead to it being neglected and used less often. Every sauna session you do is beneficial but if you get into a regular rhythm of sauna use (such as every other day) you will engage physiological changes to help you maximize benefits (such as sweating sooner, sweating more, and at lower air temps).

Pick a location that fits into your daily routine, where your naturally reminded to go in such as:

  • Near your workout space, if you have a home gym.
  • In a relaxing area, like near a reading chair, so it’s part of your unwind ritual.
  • Somewhere visible enough that it catches your eye, not tucked away in an unused corner.

5. Make It Feel Like Furniture

Our infrared saunas are not just health boxes, they’re built to look beautiful:

  • We craft them from beautiful woods, including poplar, that easily blend into a living space or a bedroom.
  • The large front glass door on all of our models lets light in and allows you to have a nice view of your surroundings while inside and not feel claustrophobic.

By placing it where it can be seen and appreciated, you’re more likely to treat it as part of your home’s interior design, not just as a wellness gadget.

6. Practical Considerations

When you’re planning the spot, don’t forget a few important technical details:

  • Ceiling height: You’ll want a ceiling at least 6’10″ high to allow for the 5″ of clearance recommended above the sauna for assembly.
  • Power outlet: The power cord on High Tech Health saunas is 6 feet long and comes out the back-left (when facing the sauna). We do not recommend putting these on an extension cord so make sure to assemble near an outlet. Our 1 or 2 person size plugs into a standard 15-amp 120V outlet, and our 3-person needs a 20-amp 120V outlet.
  • Ventilation: High Tech Health saunas use active ventilation with our fan (unique to our saunas) to let out carbon dioxide and let in oxygen, so they need a bit of room for airflow above the top. 5+ inches above the sauna is recommended.

7. Bonus: Creating Ambience Around Your Sauna

To make your sauna location feel like a true wellness retreat try adding:

  • Soft lighting, such as a small lamp or string lights.
  • A towel rack / holder beside the sauna to store extra towels.
  • A nice area rug underneath the sauna.
  • Plants around the sauna.
  • An aromatherapy diffuser.
