When it comes to infrared saunas, not all “low EMF” claims are created equal. For anyone investing in a sauna as part of a long-term health routine, understanding what EMF is, and how to truly evaluate it, is critical. Here’s what you need to know to cut through the confusion and choose a sauna that’s genuinely safe.

Why Low EMF Matters: It’s Physiologically Disruptive

EMF (electromagnetic fields) are invisible energy fields produced by electrical wiring and devices. EMF exposure doesn’t just raise abstract safety questions — it has real, measurable effects on the body. Research shows that electromagnetic fields can increase stress responses, disrupt sleep, and interfere with cellular signaling, and cause a lot of oxidative stress, especially in sensitive individuals. EMF exposure works against you in a sauna, when you are seeking detoxification, strength and recovery, lowering inflammation, and healing.

The Biggest Thing Overlooked: Electric Fields

In saunas, EMF exposure primarily comes from heater components and wiring.  There are two components to EMF, which happen simultaneously:

  • Electric fields– measured in volts per meter (V/m)
  • Magnetic fields– measured in milligauss (mG)

Electric fields are just as important as magnetic fields and the levels in infrared saunas result in exposures that are substantially larger than other exposures in your life. A lot higher than most people realize. And shockingly (pun intended), sauna companies that advertise “low EMF” are only referring to magnetic fields, but that is only half the story.

NIR Saunas can be dangerous

MEASURING AND MITIGATING BOTH TYPES OF FIELDS IS THE ONLY COMPREHENSIVE WAY TO PRODUCE A SAFE, LOW EMF SAUNA.

Nearly all saunas advertise their low EMF, but do not address electric fields at all. A sauna cannot (honestly) be “low EMF” while ignoring half of the EMF.

Another, often not discussed, form of EMF in a sauna is radiofrequency (RF EMF), which comes from wireless technologies like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Other “smart” saunas today include always-on WiFi and Bluetooth features that increase your EMF exposure (but this is not true of our Smart Sauna).

Most “Low EMF” and “Zero EMF” Claims Aren’t True

Unfortunately, nearly all sauna brands advertise “low EMF” without offering transparency. Some of the most common issues include:

  • No EMF numbers listed at all- you just have to take their word for it.
  • Confusing language – terms like “ultra low EMF” and “near zero EMF” and “low ELF” that are vague and misleading
  • No third-party verification – they may have done their own testing- very easy to manipulate the numbers.
  • Incomplete data – only showing magnetic fields, not electric fields
  • Cherry-picked testing – measurements taken far away from the heaters instead of where your body actually sits.
  • Misrepresentation– providing third party testing for heaters with different power or wiring than what is actually used in their saunas.
Zero EMF Claims are Lies

Many of the brands that boast about third-party testing fail to show surface-level measurements.

EMF levels will drop with distance from the source, so companies show numbers that are measured farther away than where you actually sit or lean.

One company showing electric field measurements, shows the electric fields measured at 1 meter away from the heater- that’s over 3 feet away!

Be Discerning with Online Sauna Reviews

Today, many people discover saunas through online reviews or “best infrared sauna” lists from influencers or wellness professionals. Some of these voices are trustworthy—they speak from firsthand experience and genuinely care about health outcomes. But others operate primarily as affiliates, promoting only the brands that pay them a commission.

Some individuals even claim to “test” saunas for EMF but dismiss independent third-party lab testing in favor of readings from inexpensive consumer-grade meters—often using inconsistent methods in uncontrolled environments. The result? Incomplete, unreliable information that may appear authoritative but lacks scientific rigor.

Let’s take a look at Third-Party Testing vs. Whole-Sauna Testing

Both third-party heater testing and whole-sauna testing have value when done correctly and transparently.

Third-Party EMF Testing:

Independent lab testing is performed using highly sensitive equipment in a controlled environment. It provides precise, accurate readings of EMF levels. However, it’s important to understand how this testing can be misused:

  • A sauna company may ask the lab to only test for magnetic fields (ignoring electric fields).
  • Measurements may be taken at artificially generous distances (e.g., 3 feet instead of 6 inches).
  • Some brands provide lab reports for heaters that don’t match what’s in their actual products – such as testing a 230V version when their saunas use 120V wiring. This can drastically alter EMF results by lowering magnetic fields and increasing electric fields.

Even legitimate third-party tests can be hard to interpret. Many companies bury key details in long technical documents to obscure how the test was performed.

Third Party Tested and Approved

Quick Checklist for Evaluating Third-Party EMF Reports:

Do they show surface measurements (to capture maximum field strength)?

Did they test the entire heater surface, not just a single, or handful of points?

Are both magnetic and electric fields reported?

Was the heater tested actually the same as what’s sold in the sauna?

Whole-Sauna Testing:

While third-party labs can’t realistically test a full sauna in a Faraday cage, whole-sauna testing also offers value—it helps show the combined EMF exposure from heaters, electronics, power cords, and more, in real-world conditions.

But this type of testing must be done carefully. Most of the whole-sauna tests we see online suffer from the following issues:

  • Unreliable meters: Many use low-cost “all-in-one” meters that lack precision in measuring any type of EMF.
  • Poor testing methods: Testing often ignores background EMF, hot spots, or fails to control for environment.
  • Lack of transparency: Often, there’s no evidence the sauna was plugged in, or all the heaters are running at all during the test.

We measured body voltage (which shows how electric fields affect your body) using our TR-3 sauna and a standard panel-heater sauna.

When Evaluating Online Reviews:

  • Look for transparency: Are affiliate relationships disclosed? Are they recommending only one brand?
  • Ask how EMF was measured: Were the readings from a full sauna setup? Were electric fields included? Were all heaters on? Was the meter accurate and appropriate for this kind of testing?
  • Be cautious with reviews that dismiss third-party testing entirely. Especially if their “testing” only supports brands they earn commission from.

Not all affiliates are misleading!  We are proud to partner with wellness professionals and content creators who ask the right questions and care deeply about getting the science right. But as a consumer, it’s important to read critically, dig deeper than surface-level rankings, and insist on clarity when it comes to EMF.

How We Do It Differently

At High Tech Health, we believe EMF safety should be based on science not marketing spin. Our Transcend® infrared saunas are designed from the ground up to offer the comprehensive lowest total EMF!

Meaning both electric and magnetic fieldsOur heaters are measured at the surface so we disclose the real maximums coming from the heaters – even closer than where your body actually sits and leans.
