I’ve had patients tell me they sit in their sauna religiously, four or five times a week, and they still feel puffy, sluggish, off. And almost every time, when we walk through what they’re actually doing in there, we find a couple of small habits quietly working against them.

That’s the frustrating thing about detox. Your body is genuinely brilliant at it. Your liver and kidneys do the heavy lifting, and a good infrared sweat gives them a hand. But you can absolutely get in your own way without realizing it. So before you buy fancier supplements or add another session to your week, let’s fix the free stuff first.

Here are the three I see most often.

1. You’re drinking out of plastic (and skipping your minerals)

You have to hydrate. No argument there. You’re losing a lot of fluid, fast. But what you’re drinking from matters more than people think.

Heat and plastic are not friends. Warm up a plastic bottle in or near a hot sauna and you encourage compounds like BPA and phthalates to leach into your water. These are endocrine disruptors, which is a fancy way of saying they mess with your hormones. And it’s a little ironic to be sipping them while you’re trying to sweat that exact category of junk out.

The other half of this: water alone doesn’t fully rehydrate you. You sweat out sodium, potassium, and magnesium too, and if you’re running low on those, your body actually clings to fluid instead of using it well. You end up feeling waterlogged instead of refreshed.

What I tell patients: Switch to a glass or stainless steel bottle. One small change, done forever. And add a pinch of quality electrolytes or minerals before your session, not after. Prime the pump before you turn up the heat.

2. You’re getting in with product still on your skin

Your skin isn’t a raincoat. It’s a two-way street, and infrared heat swings the gates wide open. Circulation climbs, pores dilate, everything gets a bit more permeable. Wonderful for pushing waste out. Less wonderful if you’ve just slathered on scented lotion and full makeup.

Because at that point, whatever’s in those products (parabens, synthetic fragrance, the usual suspects) has a much easier ride in. You’ve basically asked your body to expel toxins and absorb new ones during the same fifteen minutes. It’s like mopping the floor while your kid tracks in mud behind you.

What I tell patients: Go in clean and bare-faced. You don’t need to scrub like you’re prepping for surgery. Just don’t layer product on right beforehand. Give your skin a clear runway.

3. You’re letting sweat pool and dry on you

Here’s the one nobody thinks about. Sweat does carry trace amounts of things like heavy metals and BPA out of the body. That part’s real, though I’ll be honest with you: the amounts are modest, and sweat isn’t your main detox exit. Your kidneys still deserve most of the credit.

But once that stuff is on the surface of your skin, you don’t want it just sitting there marinating. Whether it gets meaningfully reabsorbed is genuinely up for debate, since the research is thin. Wiping it off costs you nothing though, and it’s more pleasant anyway. Nobody has ever regretted being less sweaty.

What I tell patients: Keep a cotton towel in there with you and wipe down as you go. Then when you’re done, hit the shower reasonably soon and rinse it all off. Don’t let it dry on you and call it a day.

The part most people never think about: the box itself

Everything above is about what you bring into the sauna. But there’s a bigger question. What’s the sauna bringing to you?

This is the thing that first pulled me toward High Tech Health years ago. A cheap sauna can quietly off-gas the whole time you’re in it. Formaldehyde from particle board, VOCs from adhesives and finishes, all of it baking out under the heat and going straight into your lungs while you’re trying to cleanse. You can do everything right and still be breathing the problem.

HTH builds the opposite of that on purpose: low-VOC solid woods, no plywood or particle board, water-based adhesives that don’t gas out when things get hot, plus their EMF/ELF mitigation and stainless steel heaters. It’s the same principle I keep coming back to with patients. You can’t out-detox a dirty environment. Clean the inputs first.

The short version

If you remember nothing else:

  • Get in clean. Bare skin, minimal product beforehand.
  • Wipe as you sweat, and rinse off soon after.
  • Hydrate from glass or steel, and don’t forget your minerals.

Your body already knows how to detox. Your job is just to stay out of its way, and give it a clean room to work in.
