Can Sitting in a Sauna Actually Work Your Heart Like a Workout?
Here’s something that sounds too good to be true. You sit down, relax, sweat a little, and your cardiovascular system responds almost as if you’d been on the treadmill. No pounding joints. No pushing through fatigue. Just heat, stillness, and a heart that’s quietly working harder.
This isn’t wishful thinking. It’s what researchers call an exercise mimetic, and the science behind sauna therapy as one has gotten impossible to ignore.
To be clear up front: nothing replaces actually moving your body. Walking, lifting, hiking, dancing. Whatever gets you off the couch matters. But for people who can’t exercise the way they used to, or who want to amplify what they’re already doing, sauna therapy has earned its place in the conversation. And the research keeps pointing in one direction.
What Your Body Is Actually Doing in There
When you step into an infrared sauna, your body doesn’t just sit there warming up. It mobilizes.
Your heart rate climbs. Blood vessels widen to release heat. Circulation kicks up across your whole system. Cardiac output, the volume of blood your heart pumps per minute, rises in a pattern that closely tracks what happens during moderate aerobic activity (1).

What the Research Actually Found
Three studies stand out.
The 20-year Finnish cohort study (2015). Researchers tracked more than 2,000 men for over two decades. Those who used a sauna four to seven times per week had a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared to once-a-week users. The mechanisms researchers pointed to should sound familiar by now: vasodilation, elevated heart rate, increased core temperature, and the kind of positive stress that builds resilience over time (2).
The 2024 review by Laukkanen and Kunutsor. This comprehensive paper tied regular passive heat therapy to improved vascular function, reduced arterial stiffness, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even dementia (3). The dementia connection is its own rabbit hole. The cardiovascular signal here is loud.
The 2025 Frontiers review. Published in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, this one went further and called sauna therapy a “novel management approach” for cardiovascular health. The researchers confirmed sauna sessions produce benefits comparable to aerobic exercise, including measurable changes in vascular function (4).
What makes this stack of evidence compelling isn’t any single study. It’s the consistency. Different populations, different methodologies, different sauna types, all pointing the same direction. After 28 years of working with people in saunas, we’ve watched the science catch up to what longtime users have been telling us all along.

Who Stands to Benefit Most
A few groups gain the most from this.
People who can’t exercise at the intensity they used to. Aging joints, injuries, chronic conditions, post-surgery recovery. Any of these can cut into the kind of cardio that used to be easy. Sauna therapy gives you a low-impact way to keep those cardiovascular signals firing.
Active people who want to amplify their training. Endurance athletes have been using heat exposure for years to improve plasma volume and heat acclimation. The cardiovascular benefits stack on top of training, not instead of it.
Anyone focused on long-term resilience. This is where the 20-year data hits hardest. We’re talking about reduced lifetime risk of the things that take people down too early. Heart disease, stroke, the cascade that follows from poor vascular function.
Using a Sauna Safely (and Getting the Most Out of It)
Saunas are generally safe and well-tolerated. A few things help you stay in that zone.
Hydrate before and during. Dehydration is the most common cause of trouble during sauna use. Two glasses of water before your session, one during. Add an electrolyte if you’re sweating heavily.
Skip the alcohol. The Finnish studies flagged elevated risk when alcohol and sauna combine. Save the drink for later. Much later.
Start short. Fifteen-minute sessions at lower temperatures are plenty when you’re new. Your body adapts over weeks, and there’s no prize for pushing too hard too soon.
Know when to check with your doctor. If you have low blood pressure, are pregnant or nursing, or have any diagnosed cardiovascular condition, talk to your physician before starting.
Pay attention to the sauna itself. Two things matter more than most people realize. First, EMF exposure. Choose a sauna with independently verified low-EMF heaters.
