I get some version of this question almost every week. Someone’s read that saunas lower stress, they want to know if that’s actually true, and they want it without the wellness fairy dust. Totally fair. So let me walk you through what really happens to your nervous system in the heat, what the research says, and where the popular story gets it backward.

Here’s the part that always gets a raised eyebrow. A sauna doesn’t relax your nervous system while you’re sitting in it. It actually stresses the system a bit. Your heart rate climbs, your blood vessels open up, you start sweating buckets, and your stress hormones tick up. That’s not a bug. That’s the whole point. The calm comes later, and the real payoff comes from doing it again and again.

Your two nervous systems, in plain English

You’ve got an autonomic nervous system humming along in the background right now, and it runs on two settings.

One is the sympathetic branch. You’ve heard it called fight or flight. It revs your heart up, sharpens your focus, gets you ready to move. The other is the parasympathetic branch, usually called rest and digest. It slows your heart, helps you recover, runs your digestion, lets your body fix itself. Your vagus nerve does most of that calming work.

A healthy nervous system flips between these two easily. Stress shows up, you deal with it, you settle back down. The trouble with modern life is a lot of us get stuck with the sympathetic side cranked up way too long. Work, screens, lousy sleep, a constant low hum of pressure. Your body never quite gets the memo that the tiger left.

That’s where heat comes in. When you sit in an infrared sauna, your body reads the rising temperature as a challenge it can handle. Sympathetic activity goes up during the session. Then you cool down, and your parasympathetic system comes roaring back. That rebound? That’s the good stuff.

Nervous System

What heart rate variability actually shows

The clearest window into all this is heart rate variability, or HRV. It measures the tiny gaps between your heartbeats. Here’s the counterintuitive part. More variation is better. It means your nervous system can switch gears fast instead of being stuck in one.

A 2019 study in Complementary Therapies in Medicine measured this start to finish. They tracked HRV before, during, and after a sauna. During the heat, HRV dropped and the sympathetic side took the wheel, exactly what you’d expect from a stressor. But about 30 minutes into the cool-down, the calming markers climbed higher than where they started. Resting heart rate fell from 77 beats per minute beforehand to 68 after (Laukkanen et al., 2019). The researchers’ takeaway was that the recovery period after a sauna tips your whole system toward the calm, restorative side.

So the heat isn’t the relaxing part. The cool-down is. Same shape you’d see after a solid workout, just without the burpees.

Cortisol is messier than the headlines

You’ve probably seen “saunas lower cortisol” plastered everywhere. It’s sort of true, but the timing matters and most articles breeze right past it.

In the moment, heat is a stressor, so cortisol often goes up during a single session and right after. Older research nailed this down years ago (Follenius et al., 1982; Pilch et al., 2007). That little spike is normal. It’s your stress system clocking in for work.

The cool effect shows up over weeks, not minutes. Use a sauna regularly and your body adapts to the heat, so your stress response to it shrinks a little each time. One study comparing trained and untrained guys found the untrained bodies dumped more cortisol in the sauna, while the heat-adapted athletes released less (Pilch et al., 2013). And repeated sessions seem to nudge baseline cortisol down over time (Podstawski et al., 2021).

Think of it like anything else that’s hard the first time. Your body overreacts at first. By round ten, it stays cool. Heat trains that same chill into your stress system. The whole thing runs through your HPA axis, the hormonal loop that decides how dramatic your stress response gets. You’re not deleting cortisol. You’re just teaching your body to stop spending it like it’s going out of style.

Hormesis: a little stress that makes you tougher

There’s a word for this, and it’s worth stealing for your next dinner party. Hormesis. It means a small, controlled dose of stress that makes you stronger instead of weaker. Exercise is hormesis. Cold plunges are hormesis. Heat counts too.

When your core temperature rises, your cells crank out heat shock proteins. Picture them as tiny repair crews that refold damaged proteins and protect your tissue. A 2021 review in Experimental Gerontology explained how repeated heat exposure fine-tunes your stress response through hormesis and these proteins, building tolerance for whatever comes next (Patrick and Johnson, 2021).

Here’s the plain-language version. Every session is a rehearsal. Your nervous system practices ramping up and then powering back down. Do that enough and the recovery gets quicker, the baseline gets calmer, and ordinary stress stops knocking you flat. Some researchers call it stress inoculation. I just think of it as reps for your nervous system.

Where infrared fits, and one thing folks miss

Most of the foundational research happened in scorching Finnish saunas. The good news is these autonomic effects show up with far infrared saunas too, and a recent study tracking salivary cortisol after infrared sessions found the stress response shrank as people adapted. That’s the exact resilience pattern we’re after (2025).

Infrared has a genuine edge for nervous system work. It heats your body at lower air temperatures, usually around 120 to 140 degrees instead of 180-plus. That matters more than it sounds, because you can actually relax in it. If the room’s so hot you’re gritting your teeth and counting down the seconds, congratulations, you’ve pinned yourself in fight or flight and you’ll never reach the calm rebound. One more thing, and it’s a sneaky one, because it works against the whole goal. The electromagnetic fields in a cheaply built sauna can quietly undo your nervous system work. How to actually use heat to calm down

A few things I tell people, pulled from the research and from what actually works for real humans.

Let the cool-down do its thing. The calm rebound kicks in as you come out and your temperature drops. Don’t go sprinting to your next chore. Sit. Breathe slow. Give it 10 or 15 quiet minutes. That window is where the calm gets baked in.

Don’t chase the hottest setting. More isn’t better here, and turning the dial to “lava” mostly just makes you miserable. You want enough heat to trigger the response, not so much that you’re white-knuckling the bench. A comfortable session you’ll repeat beats a brutal one you start dreading.

Stay consistent. The good baseline changes, lower cortisol, better HRV, come from regular use over weeks. Thirty minutes every other day is a solid rhythm for most people.

A few honest caveats

I’d be a lousy doctor if I skipped these. A sauna is a real cardiovascular load. If you’ve got heart disease, low blood pressure, you’re pregnant, or you’re on meds that mess with heart rate or fluids, check with your doctor before you start. Drink your water. And keep in mind that heat builds resilience, it doesn’t fix what’s actually draining you. If your stress is coming from your sleep, your calendar, or something heavier, the sauna helps you recover, but it won’t make the source disappear. Use it as one piece of the puzzle, not the whole thing.

The short version, if you only keep one line. The heat stresses you on purpose. The recovery afterward is where your nervous system learns to chill out. Do it regularly and you build a body that handles stress better and bounces back faster. That’s not a slogan. That’s just what the data says.
