How to Choose the Perfect Spot for Your Home Sauna
Bringing a sauna into your home is more than just a wellness upgrade, it’s a lifestyle transformation. Whether you’re looking to relieve stress, support muscle recovery, detoxify, or simply enjoy some peaceful time to yourself, placing your sauna in the right location is an important consideration for getting the most out of the experience.
Why Indoor Placement Matters for Infrared Saunas
Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas use gentle infrared heat to warm your body directly, and this makes them ideal for indoor use. Infrared saunas are not designed to withstand outdoor weather conditions, so placing your sauna indoors is essential for maintaining its performance, longevity, and safety.
The good news? Infrared saunas are highly flexible when it comes to where you can put them. They don’t require any plumbing or external ventilation and can be safely placed without any water or heat damage on any surface: carpet, hardwood, tile, concrete, or any flat indoor surface.
This makes bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices, basements, or even large walk-in closets all viable options as long as there’s enough space and access to the proper electrical outlet.
Know Your Electrical Requirements
To make setup simple, our infrared saunas are designed to work with standard electrical outlets, but it’s important to know exactly what your model needs:
1 or 2 Person Saunas: These models are designed to plug into a standard 15-amp, 120-volt outlet which is the same type of outlet used for most household appliances. Our 1 person size runs at 7.9 amps and our 2 person size runs at 13.5 amps.
3 Person Sauna: This larger model requires a bit more power and must be plugged into a 20-amp, 120-volt outlet. This type of outlet is also common in homes, typically used for heavy-duty appliances like microwaves or washing machines. If you’re unsure whether you have a 20-amp outlet available, a quick check with an electrician can help you prepare your space.
Considerations for Sauna Placement
Clearance: You do not need any clearance between the side walls of our sauna and your walls (you can push them right up in a corner for instance) but you do need 5 inches of clearance above the top of the sauna for assembly so you need a minimum of a 6’ 10” inch ceiling.
Power: The power cord of our saunas is 6 feet long (and comes out the back bottom left of the sauna if you are looking straight at it) and we do not recommend putting these on an extension cord so make sure your sauna is assembled within 6 feet of an outlet.
Privacy: Choose a spot where you can relax without interruption. A quiet corner of your bedroom can help enhance the calming atmosphere.
Ambience: Have a nice view out a window? High Tech Health saunas have a large glass front allowing for ample space to see outside.
Creating a Wellness Room: If you have other health tools in your home, such as a cold plunge tub, fitness equipment, etc., adding an infrared sauna to the space is a perfect compliment.
Out of Sight Out of Mind: If you place your sauna in a room you do not often frequent, there is the potential of not using your sauna as often. Thus we recommend placing your sauna in a spot that will remind you to use it. If you only have room in a less frequented spot, consider purchasing our Transcend Smart Sauna which has a remote start feature!
