You built the sauna. You plugged it in. You cranked the temperature to the max and waited 45 minutes.

You open the door expecting that blast of scorching heat you remember from the gym, but the display reads 125°F.

You panic. Is it broken? Did I get a lemon?

I hear this a lot. Before you call tech support, take a breath. Your sauna is likely working exactly how it was designed. In fact, if you have a High Tech Health sauna, you are sitting in front of some of the most powerful heaters on the market.

Here is the truth about “air temperature” vs. “real power,” and why your sauna might feel different than you expected.

1. The “Oven” vs. The Sun

Traditional saunas are basically ovens. They boil the air until it hits 180°F. The air gets hot, then the hot air heats you. It’s harsh. It burns your nostrils. You can only stay in for 10 minutes before you feel dizzy.

Infrared is different. It’s light, not just heat.

Think about a sunny day in winter. The air might be 40°F, but if you stand in direct sunlight, your face gets warm. You might even take your jacket off.

That is radiant heat. The sun isn’t heating the air; it travels through space and turns into heat when it hits your skin. Your sauna does the same. Understanding Heat Transfer in Saunas

2. We Proved Our Power (The Calorimetry Test)

Some people think, “If the air isn’t 170°F, the heater must be weak.”

Actually, it’s the opposite. We tested this in the lab using Calorimetry.

Since the human body is roughly 70% water, we placed beakers of water in our sauna and a competitor’s sauna. We set both to the same starting air temperature.

The result? Our Transcend™ heaters heated the water 34% faster and delivered 34% more absorption than standard carbon heaters.

Even if the air temperature reads lower, the amount of energy entering your body is significantly higher. You are getting a deeper sweat at a more comfortable air temperature. That isn’t a bug; it’s a feature.

3. “But I Want It Super HOT!”

I get it. You want to see the max number. And yes, our saunas are capable of reaching 158°F (70°C).

If your sauna is stuck at 120°F or 130°F and refuses to climb, it’s rarely the heaters. It’s usually the environment.

Check these three common culprits:

The “Garage Factor”
If your sauna is in an uninsulated garage or basement and it’s freezing outside, the sauna is fighting a battle. The heaters emit a constant amount of energy, but if the cold air outside the walls is sucking that heat away, the internal air temperature will struggle to rise. The infrared is still working, but the box stays cool. Our saunas also have an exclusive feature of active ventilation, which helps add more oxygen while removing excess carbon dioxide from the sauna cabin. If the external temperature is very cold, turning active ventilation on may reduce the ambient air temperature.

Voltage Drop
Heaters need juice. If you are using a long extension cord, or if the sauna shares a circuit with a freezer or treadmill, the voltage might dip. A small drop in voltage can reduce heater output by 20% or more. Many people don’t know that their outlets are slightly underpowered. You may want to check into it by getting an electrical outlet tester to ensure that your electrical outlet is outputting the right amount of voltage / amps.

Sensor Location
Heat rises. If the temperature sensor is low on the wall, it reads the coolest air in the room. The air near the ceiling might be 150°F while the floor is 100°F.

The “Sweat Test”

Here is the only test that matters.

Ignore the number on the display for a moment. Turn the sauna on. Get inside when it reads 100°F.

Sit there for 20 minutes.

Because our heaters are proven to deliver 34% more absorption, you will likely start sweating long before the air gets “hot.” If you wait for the display to hit 158°F, you are wasting the best part of the session.

If you are sweating, it’s working.
