1. What is an Infrared Sauna?
Unlike traditional saunas that rely on heating the air to uncomfortable temperatures (convection), infrared saunas use light to heat the body directly (radiation). This allows for a deep, detoxifying sweat at much lower, more comfortable ambient temperatures (110°F–130°F).
But not all heat is created equal. The key is Far Infrared wavelengths, which penetrate human tissue to vibrate cells and stimulate healing from the inside out.

3. Safety & Toxicity: The “Medical Grade” Standard for Infrared Saunas
Not all saunas are safe. Many consumer-grade saunas introduce EMF radiation and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from glues and chemically treated woods. At High Tech Health, we build saunas designed for chemically sensitive individuals.
The EMF Challenge
Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) are a known stressor on the body. While many brands claim “Low EMF,” they often fail to address electric fields (ELF).

Wood Toxicity (Why We Use Poplar)
Most saunas are made of Cedar, Eucalyptus, or Basswood, often times with plywood (industrial glues) fillers for support. These woods contain substances that can irritate the lungs and skin of sensitive users. We rely on 100% solid wood. We use Poplar—the hypoallergenic gold standard, and Hemlock. And only 100% solid wood. If we say it’s made from a particular wood, then that means it’s 100% that wood, and no other framing or filler material.

6. Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from patients, doctors, and new sauna users.
How is an infrared sauna different from a traditional sauna?
The main difference is how they heat you. A traditional sauna uses a stove to heat the air to extreme temperatures (180°F+), which warms you from the outside in (convection). An infrared sauna uses light to heat your body directly (radiation), allowing for a deep, detoxifying sweat at much cooler, more comfortable air temperatures (110°F–130°F).
Read the full comparison guide →
Is infrared sauna therapy safe for daily use?
Yes. Infrared heat is completely natural—it is the same therapeutic heat emitted by the sun, but without the harmful UV rays. For most healthy adults, daily use is safe and encouraged for maximum detoxification benefits. However, we always recommend consulting your physician before starting any new health regimen.

Why does “Low EMF” matter, and how do I verify it?
Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) are a known stressor on the body. While many brands claim “Low EMF,” they often only test for magnetic fields and ignore Electric Fields (ELF). High Tech Health saunas feature our patented Triple Antifield™ heaters, which mitigate both, ensuring you aren’t exposing yourself to harmful radiation while trying to detox.

Why is wood choice important? (Why Poplar?)
This is a critical safety factor often overlooked. When wood is heated, it releases oils and compounds into the air (off-gassing). While Cedar and Basswood are popular, they contain natural terpenes that can irritate the lungs and skin, especially for sensitive users. We use 100% Solid Poplar because it is the only truly hypoallergenic, odor-free wood available.

How much electricity does a sauna use?
Infrared saunas are surprisingly energy efficient. Because they heat up quickly and don’t require maintaining a massive room temperature, a typical session costs pennies to run. Most models plug into a standard household outlet (depending on size), making them as easy to install as a large appliance.
