In the last century and a half, mankind’s impact on the planet has started changing the climate through global warming. These changes are expected to cause extinctions of plants and animals as well as pose a substantial threat to human health in the coming decades.
Global warming is attributed to the increased presence of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. These gases help trap in heat, which results in raising the earth’s surface temperature. Forests help to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but they are being cut down. The burning of increasing quantities of oil, gasoline, and coal promotes the problem. The solution is for the world to decrease production of greenhouse gases.
In order to change our impact, we must measure the problem and take steps to undo that harm or avoid it altogether. All of the relevant gases can be expressed by the equivalent impact they would have if they were all carbon dioxide. This is why people talk about “reducing carbon emissions”, or “lowering their carbon footprint”, or being “carbon-neutral”. Greenshipping.com has worked with High Tech Health to calculate the impact on the environment that the shipping of our products around the world is having. We know exactly how much our products are contributing through traveling from factory to your doorstep.
Since January 1st, 2010, High Tech health has been purchasing carbon offsets such that we remove a greater amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than we contribute.
A carbon offset is a convenient way to purchase the reduction or removal from the atmosphere of one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.
Carbon offsets can vary in quality and are not all equal. Ours are very high quality and come from Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), a non-profit organization. They are used to fund the construction of NEW renewable energy projects in North America. All of the renewable sources of BEF’s carbon offsets meet rigorous environmental criteria endorsed by leading regional and national environmental organizations including The Natural Resources Defense Council.
